Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio 2026: Dates, Shadow Periods and a Practical Guide

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio 2026: a white candle on ruled paper beside a mug

Mercury goes retrograde on 24 October 2026 at 20 degrees of Scorpio, and it does not turn direct again until 14 November (AEDT). That is the headline, and every astrology site will give you that version. This post goes a little further: the full shadow dates, why Scorpio changes the flavour, what is worth doing and avoiding, and an honest note on what the science does and does not say.

The exact dates

According to Cafe Astrology’s 2026 ephemeris, the cycle runs like this. Mercury enters its pre-retrograde shadow on 4 October at 5 degrees Scorpio. It stations retrograde on 24 October at 20 degrees 59 minutes Scorpio. It stations direct on 13 November in US Eastern time, which is 14 November in Sydney, back at 5 degrees 02 minutes Scorpio. It then travels through its post-retrograde shadow until about 30 November, when it finally crosses 20 degrees 59 minutes again.

What a retrograde is, in plain terms

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and moves fast. Several times a year Earth catches up with it and passes it, so from here it appears to slide backwards against the stars for about three weeks. It is an optical effect. NASA’s Mercury overview covers the planet itself if you want the physical background.

It is also worth being straight about the science. There is no evidence that Mercury retrograde causes technology to fail or contracts to collapse. What astrology offers is a symbolic framework: Mercury rules communication, thinking, paperwork, travel and trade, and when it appears to turn back, practitioners treat the period as a time for review, not launch. Whether you read that as cosmic influence or as a useful scheduling prompt is up to you. Either way, slowing down before signing something is rarely a bad idea.

Why the shadows matter

The shadow periods are the stretches where Mercury travels over the same degrees it will cross during the retrograde. The pre-shadow, from 4 to 24 October, is where themes first surface. The post-shadow, from 14 to 30 November, is where they resolve. Many practitioners find the pre-shadow is the quiet warning and the post-shadow is the clean-up. If you noticed small hiccups from early October, that is the stretch they tend to attribute to the shadow.

What Scorpio changes

Scorpio is a fixed water sign. It deals with secrets, shared money, intimacy, power, grief and anything that gets handled out of sight. A retrograde here asks you to go back over the subjects most people prefer to leave alone. That might be a joint account, a family conversation you keep postponing, something you said that you never fully meant, or a pattern in a relationship that you have explained away.

It is a thinner, more private retrograde than the ones in Gemini or Virgo. You are less likely to lose your keys and more likely to realise you have been avoiding a hard conversation. Pluto, Scorpio’s traditional ruler, turned direct on 16 October, so the themes arrive with extra weight. If you have not read the Pluto direct post, it is a useful companion to this one.

What to do during it

Back things up. This is the unglamorous, effective advice and it is worth following. Save your files, check your passwords, confirm bookings, and reread messages before you send them.

Review instead of starting. Revisit projects you left unfinished, return to people you lost touch with, and tidy the paperwork you have been ignoring. Mercury retrograde is a good period for editing, revising and rereading.

Say less in the heat of the moment. Scorpio does not forgive a careless word easily. If a conversation is charged, wait a day before you reply.

What to be careful with

Avoid launching a business, signing large contracts or making major purchases in the middle of the retrograde if you have a choice. If you do not have a choice, read everything twice and leave room for corrections. Travel plans are worth checking more than once, and shared money needs clear written agreements.

A southern hemisphere note

This retrograde runs from late spring into early summer for us, which is also the busiest time of year for deadlines, events and end-of-year planning. That makes the retrograde bite in a practical way. The post-shadow ending on 30 November lines up neatly with the start of summer, so if you can hold the major decisions until December, you are working with the grain of the transit.

If you want a slower, gentler way to mark it, keep a notebook next to your bed and write down what comes up in conversations or dreams. Review the notes on 14 November when Mercury turns direct, and again on 30 November when it clears the shadow.

The next few weeks

The Hunter’s Moon in Taurus arrives on 26 October, two days after the station. The New Moon in Scorpio follows on 9 November, and on 14 November both Mercury and Venus turn direct on the same day. We will go through each of them in the astrology and transits section.
