This new moon spell for spring is built around a plain idea: you plant a seed and name what you want it to grow. It works well at any new moon during southern hemisphere spring, and it suits beginners because it uses a few cheap materials and a clear sequence. It is also a good one to repeat each lunar month, so you can see how your intentions develop.
Why seeds and the new moon
The new moon is the beginning of the lunar cycle, the dark point when the Moon is not visible. Traditionally it is the time to start things. Seeds make the same point physically: they are small, they need patience, and they cannot be rushed. The working asks you to choose one thing to start, put it in the ground, and tend it. The living plant is a daily reminder that gives the intention something to do besides sit in your head.
When to do it
Work on the night of the new moon or within the first two or three days afterwards. The next new moon is on 9 November 2026 at 6.02pm AEDT, in Scorpio. With Mercury and Venus both retrograde then, it is better for repairing and refining than for launching, and we cover that in the Scorpio new moon guide. If you want a clean start, wait for the Sagittarius new moon on 9 December at 11.52am AEDT, or run this spell now as a spring starting ritual and adjust the intention. What you need
One small pot with drainage and some potting mix. Seeds of something quick and hardy, such as basil, nasturtium, sunflower or a salad herb. A bowl of plain water. A single candle in a white or silver holder. A pen and a small slip of paper. Everything is available at a nursery or supermarket.
Choosing the intention
Write one sentence on the paper that begins with a verb and describes something within your power to do over the coming month. For example, I begin the draft, I make the call, I start the daily walk. Avoid wishes that depend on someone else changing, and avoid anything vague. Fold the paper once.
The working
Work in the evening, outside if you can and indoors by a window if not. Set the pot, the water, the candle and the folded paper on a table. Light the candle and sit for a minute with the pot in front of you, noticing the weather and the sounds around you. Hold the bowl of water in both hands and say aloud what you intend to begin, so the water carries the words. Fill the pot with soil, make a small hole, and place the folded paper at the bottom. Drop in the seeds, cover them over, and water them with the bowl of water, saying the intention again as it goes in. Rest your hands on the soil for a moment and picture yourself taking the first step you named. Let the candle burn down while you tidy up, or snuff it and relight it each evening until it is used up. Put the pot somewhere you will see it every day.
Aftercare
Water the plant and watch it. When it sprouts, write a line about what you did that week toward your intention. When the full moon arrives, review honestly: did the seed grow, and did you act? If something is stuck, ask what stopped you and write it down. Repot or harvest the plant at the end of the lunar cycle and use what it gives you.
If the seeds do not sprout, it does not mean the working failed. It means the seeds did not sprout. Replant them and take it as a prompt to review your plan.
Variations
If you do not have a garden or a balcony, use a jar of water with a cutting of a plant like mint or basil. If you want to work with a larger goal, plant a perennial herb like rosemary and care for it over months. If you are working with the southern hemisphere wheel of the year, spring is the right season to plant. Our Wheel of the Year guide sets out the festivals that fit this time.
Safety
Never leave a lit candle unattended, keep flames away from paper and dry plants, and follow local fire restrictions if you work outdoors. Do not add salt to the water, because salt will stop seeds from growing. If you want a salt element, put a small pinch in a saucer next to the pot and dispose of it in the bin afterwards.
