Hunter’s Moon 2026: Full Moon in Taurus on 26 October (AEDT)

Hunter's Moon October 2026: a bright full moon in a dark night sky

The full moon of 26 October 2026 peaks at 3.12pm AEDT at 2 degrees of Taurus. It is traditionally called the Hunter’s Moon, and it falls in the middle of the Mercury retrograde window, with Scorpio season still in progress. That combination is worth unpacking, because it is both an astronomy event and a very particular astrological setup.

The astronomy first

A full moon happens when the Moon sits on the opposite side of Earth to the Sun, so its entire face is lit from our point of view. The peak is a single moment, and in Sydney it falls in the afternoon, so the Moon will not be visible at the exact time. It will rise around sunset on the evening of the 26th and will look full for the nights either side of it. If you want to check moonrise in your own city, timeanddate.com’s moon phase calendar lets you enter your location.

This is not an eclipse. The Farmers’ Almanac points out that no lunar eclipse occurs on 26 October 2026, so any red or orange tint you see is down to smoke, dust or the Moon sitting low on the horizon.

Where the name comes from

The Hunter’s Moon is the full moon that follows the Harvest Moon. In 2026 the Harvest Moon fell on 26 September, so the next one is the Hunter’s Moon. The name comes from the northern hemisphere. By late October the crops were in, the fields were bare, and animals that had fed on leftover grain were easy to spot under a bright moon. Hunting season opened and the extra light helped. Other traditional names for this moon include the Travel Moon, the Dying Grass Moon and the Falling Leaves Moon.

None of that fits Australia, where it is spring and the fields are growing, not harvested. That mismatch is worth noticing. Names like these are folklore from a specific climate, and borrowing them without thinking can leave you with a ritual that does not match what is outside your window. In the south, this moon is better thought of as a flowering moon, a nesting moon or a growing moon.

What a Taurus full moon is about

Taurus is a fixed earth sign ruled by Venus. It governs the body, food, money, comfort, possessions, and the things you can touch. A full moon is an illumination point, so a full moon in Taurus tends to light up questions about what you have, what you value, what you own and what you are willing to pay for it.

It is also opposite the Sun in Scorpio, which is why this full moon has a tension to it. Taurus asks what is stable and what is worth keeping. Scorpio asks what has to end. Between the two you get a very practical question: what are you holding on to out of comfort that you have actually outgrown?

Why the timing matters

With Mercury retrograde starting two days earlier, this is not the moment to make any big money or contract decisions. It is a good moment to audit them. Look at your budget, your subscriptions, your shared accounts, and what you spend on things that do not feed you. If something has been quietly draining money or energy, this is the point to notice it.

Pluto turned direct only ten days earlier. If you took notes during the retrograde, reread them now. The Taurus full moon often makes abstract themes physical, and you may find that what you wrote about in October can be traced to something in your home, your body or your bank balance.

A simple working for the night

Keep it grounded. Take a bowl of water outside, or leave it by a window, and let the moonlight touch it. Write down three things you currently own, pay for or commit to that you would not choose again. Next to each, write one thing you could do about it. Read them aloud, then keep the list somewhere you will see it.

If you want something physical to work with, Taurus responds to texture and scent. Rose, thyme, sage and a plain white or green candle are all fitting. Eat something good after the working. Taurus does not believe in ritual without dinner.

What to avoid

Full moons amplify mood, and a Taurus full moon in a retrograde window can bring stubbornness. If you notice you are digging in on something just because it is yours, pause before you send the message. Do not make an impulse purchase because you feel you deserve it. Do not cancel everything in one burst either. Choose one thing.

Looking ahead

The next lunation is the New Moon in Scorpio on 9 November, and the next full moon is in Gemini on 25 November. If you want a refresher on how to work with each phase, the post on moon phases in witchcraft covers the basics, and the lunar magick section collects everything in one place.
